Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina Command: ACC Major Unit: 4th WingKC-10A, F-15E, T-38A Tenant Units: 916th ARW—KC-10A (AFRes) Location and Origin of Name: within the city limits of Goldsboro, and named for Navy Lieutenant Seymour A. Johnson, who was killed while flight testing a Grumman monoplane near Norbeck, Maryland on 5 March 1941

The base was established as Technical School, AAFTTC Goldsboro in 1942 and was renamed Seymour Johnson Field soon afterwards. The field accommodated the Aviation Cadet Pre-Technical School Training program during World War II, before becoming an AAF Separation Center postwar. It was inactive from 1947 until April 1956 when under TAC control. The 83rd FDW was in residence in 1956 and 1957, operating the F-86 and F-100, and then was replaced by the 4th FDW which returned to the USA from the Far East. The 4241st Strategic Wing was formed by SAC in October 1958 and was replaced by 68th BW in April 1963. The latter unit became an Air Refueling Group in September 1982 and later upgraded to a Wing with the KC-10A assigned. The wing merged with the 4th TFW to become the 4th Wing under TAC as the first composite wing to evaluate the principal before the creation of more complex units. KC-10s began being transferred to AMC late in 1994, with the unit due to become the 4th FW in 1995 as the major operational F-15E unit stationed in the continental USA.
